... and the last Window is closed

Today will see the last Windows native machine here at Fuzzy Orange shut down for good. Yes, today see us become Windows free. At least natively.

Whilst we will continue to run Windows in a VM environment - predominantly for clients - we are now exclusively running Linux on all our machines; Servers, Desktops and Laptops.

We're running a mixture of Ubuntu (desktop/laptops), Fedora 7/8 (for fun) and CentOS (CF/DB/SVN/Trac). All in all, it's been a smooth transition. Our next step is to bring our email in house, and get it up and running on Zimbra.

Happy days.

Jim Priest's Gravatar Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy! :) Please blog about your Zimbra experiences... Lots of rumors going around that Google is also going to deploy some kind of email server soon.

Jeff Self's Gravatar So I guess Sharepoint integration is of no interest to you? :-)

I'm worried that the more Adobe looks to integrate ColdFusion with Microsoft technologies, the more they are going to realize that it makes more sense to port ColdFusion to dot net and abandon Java.

Google already has enterprise email. I would seriously look at that before bringing your email in house. I believe Google's enterprise mail costs about $25 per user per year. Compared to having to deal with your own servers, I think its a bargain.

Andy Allan's Gravatar @jeff: nope, Sharepoint integration doesn't interest us (at this point). And so far we're seeing no demand for CF/Sharepoint integration here in the UK. That's not to say it won't come, and obviously with Ben Forta blogging about it people are enquiring to Adobe at least.

If we do pick up any Sharepoint work, then we still have our Windows VMs.

In regards Google, we'd rather not rely on 3rd party hosted services for that any more. I've worked with both in-house and hosted solutions before, and my preference is definitely in house. No complaints that the $25 per user per year is a bargain mind you. We'd just prefer to be in full control.

@jim: I'll definitely post about our experience with Zimbra. This will probably happen after Scotch on the Rocks though, as it (Scotch) is just eating up way too much time. Bare with me on that one :)
